ABOUT THE PAINTING
I was commissioned to paint "Flippin’ Jimmy" specifically for the second season of the show Better Call Saul, a spin-off series of Breaking Bad. The painting captures a figure in mid air whose human form has dissolved into a pattern of circles known as the “flower of life”, leaving behind the hollow shells of shoes and clothing. I used the geometry pattern to acknowledge the unseen energy of the physical body that connects us to the subtle realms of space and spirit. The abstracted background leaves room for interpretation of whether the figure is flying, falling, floating, flipping, or slippin’. The main character in the series, Jimmy McGill, looks at the painting and when asked by his assistant if he would like another art piece in his office, Jimmy points to the painting and says, "I like this." Not the most detailed critique, but one of my most noteworthy reviews!
The painting was originally contracted to be used and then destroyed by the TV show. My friend and agent for this project, Sara Jo Fischer, recently proposed an alternative ending to save the painting from the wood chipper and make it available to the fans of Better Call Saul through a giveaway, and use the proceeds to help empower a humanitarian non-profit. This felt like a win-win for everyone involved and so we are making it happen! We've partnered up with Gravity Water, an organization that turns rain into safe drinking water for schools in need around the world. I've been witnessing and supporting Gravity Water over the years and love what they do and how they do it. Let me share some more about who they are or you can visit their website and explore for yourself!
100% OF THE PROCEEDS GO TO GRAVITY WATER
Gravity Water focuses on a low-technology approach to safe drinking water access through combining rainwater harvesting, elevated storage, and gravity-fed filtration. They have been successfully implementing these systems since 2016 and have helped over 75 communities and schools in Nepal, Vietnam, Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. Gravity Water teams up with local representatives in each location for the construction, implementation, and upkeep of these systems. This method keeps the locals empowered, supported, and more independent throughout the process.
I have personally been involved with fundraising for one of their filtration systems at the Koseli School in Nepal and I was lucky enough to visit in person along with the founder of the organization, Danny Wright. It was clear that the new water system was the nucleus of the school's activities, from drinking, cooking, cleaning, and bathing. I was truly moved by the impact I saw and was reminded how significant clean water is to quality of life. I believe in this organization, trust their process, want to support more of these projects!
